Introduction
Any introduction of Jamaica must start with its people. With the mix of cultures that characterize the Jamaican psyche, we are indeed an interesting people. Don’t be surprised to see a black person, with slated Chinese eyes and typical European features. The influence of our ancestors is also seen in our interaction. Our dancing reflects the movement of Africa, our fondness for a night in the club, possibly from our Irish influence. We are a people of unique expressions – vociferous talk and rapid hand signals are par of course for the average Jamaican. We are expressive in every way – our movement, our language, our music, and our art.
Our past has moulded us but our character defines us. We are a proud and assertive people. Discover this and more on your island journey.
Our first inhabitants were Tainos, an Arawak speaking tribe from South America. During one of his many voyages to the West (or East, as he thought!), Christopher Columbus happened on this fair isle, and soon it came under Spanish rule. Spanish Town (Villa de la Vega) was the Spaniards new city and a former capital of the island. However, the Spanish rule was short-lived, as in the 1650s, the British captured Jamaica from the Spanish. The hardship of slavery for African labourers under British rule was tremendous and this led to many revolts. The British were to rule Jamaica until 1962 when the island was declared an independent nation.
